Victori+Mo is pleased to present Secrets of Leaves an immersive exhibition of new work from Adrienne Elise Tarver building on her explorations of voyeurism boundaries and discovery opening February 17, 2017 and on view through March 19, 2017.

Secrets of Leaves consists of caulking paintings on wire mesh and sculptures of varying scale affixed to the gallery walls and hung from the ceiling throughout the space. The walls will be painted with flora motifs interspersed with leaf sculptures protruding at various intervals creating the sense of not only viewing a jungle but being in one.
The installation of the work subverts the standard gallery mode of passive viewing within a static white cube conceived in a manner that the viewer is compelled to navigate around the artworks stepping over or passing through them. The space necessitates the viewer to be present in order to activate it as a means of drawing attention to the invisible structures we create and how they work to separates us. The viewer seduced by colors and textures is lost in dense and tactile walls of tropical foliage often missing the figures existing within the artwork.
“The focus is on ‘the other’ Tarver says. “This idea that allowing yourself to look too long includes some sort of permission—in that permission you have created a divide and though also a human the object of your attention is seen as a different being, not like yourself. I think this steers the conversation towards why and how we look at ‘the other’ and encourages a conversation about looking at each other with empathy and respect as opposed to discussing borders and barriers.”
In its deliberate obfuscation of the line between craft and construction Secrets of Leaves also subverts normative notions of the masculine-feminine binary. The sculptures use housebuilding materials but appear delicate for instance points resembling delicately woven lace are in reality caulking on mesh.
Channeling the tropics and the legacy of imperialism, the paintings in this series are in conversation with not just the practices of Henri Rousseau and Paul Gauguin but also the real-world implication of their art and recall the vibrancy and visual signatures of Chris Ofili and Peter Doig.

Don’t feel too bad about the voyeuristic nature of Adrienne Elise Tarver’s new video work, eight video vignettes of rooms in someone’s home. The artist has constructed an entire fictional persona for the resident, named “Vera Otis,” based on a found photograph of an anonymous black woman in glasses. According to the gallery Otis, whose name is a play on the word veritas, “acts as a surrogate for Tarver who, as a woman of color, finds Otis’s life a comforting place to imbue her hopes and fears upon.”

Numen is the best word. Though this term—drawn from Roman paganism—is far removed from our contemporary context, it remains the best description of the method by which artist Adrienne Elise Tarver’s project succeeds. A numen is a spirit, especially one believed to inhabit a particular object. Though the word might seem foreign or antiquated, the concept is familiar, even in our digital age. We all have a tendency to collect numinous objects: the tassel from your graduation cap, a pressed flower from a romantic date, or a scruffy teddy bear that is emblematic of childhood. Numinous objects “concretize [the] abstract.”[1] With these objects, concepts such as being, time, and/or memory are embodied in the tangible. This connection is not inherent; instead it is created and can die away. A numinous object exists as long as a single person remembers the connection between the object and the significant person, place, or event it references. In the same way, a numen loses its power when all those who remember the association are lost.[2]
Numinous objects reveal more than memories, they speak to psychological needs. Psychologist Paul Bloom argues that the history of an object changes how we experience it. Bloom emphasizes that our pleasure with an object increases with knowledge of its history.[3] In short, we desire objects with history. In her work, Tarver builds upon this connection between objects, history, and desire in order to investigate issues of transgression and voyeurism. In her multi-media installation, Eavesdropping, Tarver constructs and presents a host of numinous objects, making concrete the abstract concepts of knowledge and desire...

VICTORI + MO is proud to present Stories of Shadows, an exhibition of recent video work and new installation from Adrienne Elise Tarver exploring voyeuristic notions of insider, outsider and the other, opening December 8, 2016 and on view through December 18, 2016. An opening reception will be held on December 9.
Stories of Shadows expands upon an iteration of the artist’s Eavesdropping series in which Tarver constructed a fictional narrative around a found photograph of a black woman. Wearing glasses and facing the camera, this woman’s anonymity captivated Tarver, who created a fictional identity for her including details about her domestic life. Tarver named the woman Vera Otis (“veritas,” or, truth) as a reminder that nothing about her is, in fact, true. In many ways, Vera Otis acts as a surrogate for Tarver who, as a woman of color, finds Otis’s life a comforting place to imbue her hopes and fears upon...
...Following Stories of Shadows, Tarver will receive a second exhibition at Victori + Mo on February 17 – March 19, 2017 where she will continue to explore themes of voyeurism and otherness moving between innocent observance toward moral intrusion. For the February exhibition, Tarver will create an installation of paintings and sculptures forming a jungle which one has to navigate through, while alternating between being the voyeur and the object of desire.

VICTORI + MO is proud to present 30 Under 30ish, an exhibition of 30 works by 30 professional artists under 30ish years old, opening July 8 and on view through July 30.
A satirical commentary on the various and ostensibly influential “power” lists published by Forbes, Time, and the like, this aptly titled exhibition highlights the contradictory emotions that rest on the fringe of such rankings. These lists hold a place in media history, and despite being founded on the premise of headline alliteration, landing a spot on any of them is like capturing a trophy of cultural and professional worthiness amongst peers.
We strive to be recognized as top performers by the media machine operators we’ve never met, however we also understand the somewhat dogmatic and nuanced publication of these lists. Young professionals are striving to change the world today at an increasingly fast pace. We’re all racing towards some top spot somewhere, list or no list. So while we’re all pushing each other to higher success through healthy competition faster than rankings can, we can remove the power from the power-list makers and simply lend praise to the highly talented individuals in our contexts.

I'm proud to be a part of the inaugural exhibition of Unisex Salon...
We are pleased to announce a new collective space, Unisex Salon. Taking our name from the business that previously occupied the storefront, we are using the salon, in the art historical sense, as a model for the space. The complete conceptual and structural armature of this endeavor is still in progress, but we hope to create a space for conversation and community.
With this in mind, we invited a group of artists to join this conversation with us, and present incomplete works from their studios. In the Works includes pieces by Eric Ashcraft, Ben Thorp Brown, Emmy Catedral, Oasa DuVerney, Melisa Hopson, Kricket Lane, Phi Nguyen, Shawn Powell, James Powers, Sophia Rauch, Winslow Smith, Quintin Rivera-Toro, and Adrienne Tarver.

Interested in exploring the notions of insider, outsider and the other, artist Adrienne Elise Tarver will create an installation to exploit our curiosity of what’s within the barriers and question what is gained (and at the same time lost) once we’ve looked inside. She does this with both large scale video projections and a miniature model home, to explore the life of a woman from an old photograph she found in a thrift store. Young, black, and female, wearing glasses and facing the camera, Tarver was enticed by her anonymity, and built a story about the woman, starting with her home and finding the narrative as the pieces came together.

PRIME features eight of Trestle Gallery’s Spring 2015 artist residents: Lauren Bierly, Elisa Carreno, Chelsea Horvath, Anna Kilijunen, Allie Rex, Kara Smith, Adrienne Tarver, and Bridgette Zou. The exhibition brings together a diverse selection of media, processes, and themes to find a common ground in the search for patterns and essential qualities in nature and creation. Works by Elisa Carreno, Chelsea Horvath, and Adrienne Tarver manipulate imagery of nature to explore beauty, and decay. Lauren Bierly, Allie Rex, and Kara Smith use varied source materials to create installations of detailed, meditative repetitions. Anna Kiljunen’s deconstructed portraits find the common forms in faces. And Bridgette Zou uses psychedelic patterns to highlight bold pronouncements in her text-based paintings.
The title “PRIME” also references the goals of Trestle’s residency program; to support artists with potential and give them the tools they need to reach their prime. Every six months, Trestle Gallery offers a competitive residency to a group of artists in its Gowanus arts center. Trestle’s residencies are designed to help artists and curators find a foothold in the art world while they develop their practice. Residents are provided with six months of free or discounted studio space, regular meetings with an advisor to guide their work, and periodic studio visits from gallerists and art world professionals. The residency culminates in an exhibition that provides an opportunity for the resident artists to share their new work with the community.
